Dia Mirza was born as Dia Handrich on 9 December, 1981 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. She did her schooling from Vidyaranya High School, which is partly based on the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti and later Nasr School, in Khairtabad. She attended Stanley Junior College and acquired graduation in Bachelors of Arts from Andhra Pradesh Open University, Hyderabad. Dia Mirza worked while in college as a marketing executive for a media firm, Neeraj’s Multi-media Studio. At the same time she modeled for print and TV commercials for brands like Lipton, Wall’s ice cream, Emami and many more. She was hand-picked by destiny to win the crown of Femina Miss India Asia Pacific 2000. She also won Miss Asia Pacific 2000 on December 3 in Manila, Philippines and was the first Indian contestant to win this title in 29 years completing a hat trick of international wins for India in that year. Thus her filmy sail started with her debut movie Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001) opposite the Tolly star R. Madhavan aka Maddy. Although this film was not a box office success the songs composed by Harris Jayaraj were immensely popular among the music lovers.
In 2012, Mirza tried her luck into regional cinema with Bengali filmmaker Pratim Dasgupta’s Paanch Adhyay. The movie turned out to be a success and was selected by film festivals in India and across the world. She appeared in the films Dus and Fight Club. She was the only female actor among the six key characters Acid Factory, in which she played a gangster femme fatale, but the film was a failure. Mirza will next be featuring in Johny Mastana, Bits and Pieces, Kayanat, Bidhaatar Lekha and Familywala. Dia Mirza has worked with the government of Andhra Pradesh to spread HIV awareness and to prevent the female foeticide. She has been actively involved with the Spastics Society of India, the Cancer Patients Aid Association, PETA and CRY. She is among those actress’ who are repeatedly wrapped in false controversies, but she knows very well how to handle the heat.
